Poor Planning

*sigh*

Poor planning seems to be the name of the game this week. I didn't make time for crafting (or blogging) on Friday. Saturday, I waited until the last minute to pull files off my old computer, even though I was supposed to drive 2 hours to drop it off. This also ended up taking away my crafting time. Then today, I finally had time to craft (yay!) and made a total mess! I decided to go back to resin, but I just did a terrible job of planning it out.

First project: I have made some resin cabachons (a large item, generally without a hole, that's used as a centerpiece of a jewelry item) filled with candy sprinkles. Now, this was not an original idea, but not really a copywritable one, either. If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know! Anyway, recently I've had a couple of people specifically request them, so I thought I'd make a batch or two. These should be easy to mass produce and I have a couple of specific projects in mind for them (I ordered some materials for them today - should be posting tests later this week). I did actually plan this one out okay, but I would have liked to make more.

Second project: I decided to make a couple more comic book bangles. I picked two really great strips from comic books! One had a couple of cool panels with Jean Gray going crazy, and the other was a strip from my favorite childhood comic (which totally proves I wasn't into comics), Power Pack! It showed little kids swimming around on the top, then a shark rushing up in the next part. Don't worry - Power Pack saved the day!

So two bangles, two disasters. I forgot to put a sealer on the page before putting the first one in the resin. This may not affect the look of the paper, but it made the paper nearly impossible to work with, so I gave up about halfway through. The second one was going to be using a new mold, which was a lot wider. I remembered to seal the page, but I used up too much of that batch of resin before I started to fill the mold. I only got a little over half of the mold filled when I ran out. Sounds like no big deal, but one of the golden rules of resin is that you're not supposed to mix batches. Oh well! I've learned two important things for next time.

  1. Hey...I like reading your stuff. You asked for ideas...and I did email you one last week...but you probably haven't read it yet. :)
Fire Mountain has some sort of colored 2-part resin that they show rolled into bead shapes then covered w/ stone chips. Not very impressive, but I bet you can do amazing stuff w/ it. It actually may be like that blue stuff you make molds with...only in different colors. I can bring the catalog Tuesday if you want to see.

  2. Sorry, Sue! I thought I replied, but that goes hand-in-hand with my bad planning weekend! I have seen a little about that, but I have kind of glanced over it because I didn't like the projects I saw. But you're right - I should still take a closer look and maybe give it a chance. So, yes, please bring the catalog. See ya next week!
